UUGI Academic SIG General Business Meeting

May 2, 2002

Officers present:
David Armond, Chair, 2001-2002 (Brigham Young University)
<david_armond@byu.edu)
Margo Pierson, Chair Elect, 2001-2002 (Southern Arkansas University)
<mmpierson@saumag.edu>
Marynelle Chew, Secretary, 2001-2002 (Brigham Young University-Hawaii)
<chewm@byuh.edu>

1.    An attendance roll was circulated (see Appendix B for list)
2.    No minutes from the 2000-2001 meeting available

Agenda:
1.    Report of 2001 Committees
a.    Alternative Locations Taskforce.  This taskforce was originally charged with determining the costs and benefits of alternate locations for UUGI.  An UUGI blue ribbon taskforce later subsumed this Academic SIG taskforce.
b.    Academic SIG Website Committee.  Last year a committee of six volunteers began developing a website devoted to ASIG issues.  Due to technical difficulties, this prototype was not available for display at the meeting.  Content was to include news, minutes, help and a link to the enhancement forums.
Motion:  David moved that the committee continue to develop this web site.  Motion seconded.  No discussion.  Motion carried by a show of hands.
David then asked for volunteers to work as content editors and for suggestions on web content.  (see Appendix for list of volunteers)

2.    Election results for SIG officers 2002-2003
Chair Elect
Mary Popp (Indiana University) – 35 votes
<popp@Indiana.edu>
Melanie Myers (Carnegie Mellon University) – 9 votes

Secretary
Marynelle Chew (Brigham Young University-Hawaii) – 36 votes
<chewm@byuh.edu>
David Armond (Brigham Young University, Provo) – 8 votes

3.    An Immodest Proposal.  David outlined a proposed document that would be directed to both SIRSI and the UUGI president, addressing the state of the ASIG members, their satisfactions and their concerns, to be published on the website.  Rationale:  This letter could provide an avenue for better communication and a concrete method of tracking ASIG concerns.
Discussion:
It is important to get input from everyone.  Interests and issues vary greatly between large and small sites. (Mary Popp)
DRA people will bring a fresh perspective.  Perhaps their concerns should be given a weighted consideration. (Selden Deemer)
It would be helpful to have a SIRSI customer liaison or manager for users groups.  (Elizabeth Chamberlain)
The emphasis should be on issues unique to academics and not duplicate what’s already there. (Ellen Rappaport)
Chuck Leachman (of SIRSI) would be a good contact person for iLink issues.  As SIRSI develops the eLibrary concept, Academics should be in on the ground floor.  (Becky Flynn)
Selden Deemer expressed interest in participating in eLibrary development..
While getting consensus is sometimes a pain, it is necessary.  A SIG carries more authority or weight in voicing concerns.  (Amiee Fifarek)
No formal motion was made.  The consensus was that this type of letter is a strongly recommended practice for the incoming Chair and Chair Elect.

4.    One Final Thing.  The ASIG Outstanding Service Award, in recognition of unwavering commitment to meeting academic libraries’ needs, was awarded to a SIRSI employee who has really gone the extra mile.  Lisa Mason Witteman was awarded the first plaque.

5.    Other Issues From the Floor.  None.

David passed the eGavel to Margo Pierson. Academic SIG General Business Meeting adjourned until UUGI 2003.

Respectfully submitted,
Marynelle Chew
ASIG Secretary
