Full day pre-conference:
Library Catalog Add-ons & Replacements
Saturday, April 5, 2008, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM, Registration: $100.00

Future library catalogs in the not too distant future may look very little like what they do now. The purpose of this pre-conference seminar is to provide an opportunity for Unicorn users who have begun using library catalog add-ons or actually begun to move away from the standard WebCat/iBistro/iLink catalogs to come together and share what they have done, why, and how these changes are being received by users.

Morning presentations will center on what has been done, why, and reception by users. Afternoon presentations will go into more depth as to how the add-in/replacement was implemented, maintenance, limitations as well as providing more time for in-depth questions and discussions. I am also hoping to provide time in the afternoon for some general discussion about other future trends.

Afternoon Half day pre-conference:
Unicorn Indexing and Search/Retrieval: What You Really Need to Know

Saturday, April 5, 2008, 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM, Registration: $50.00

A couple of years ago I failed miserably trying to adequately cover all of the concepts associated with indexing in a short period of time. With a half day session and the expert assistance of Steve MacNeil attendees will leave the session with the understanding required to deal with the what and how of indexing, including making improvements to the users’ search experience. Formats, indexing variations, indexing policies, gateway elements, form files and BRS are just some of the concepts which will be covered in providing an explanation of the mechanics underlying Unicorn search and retrieval in a variety of user interfaces, including iLink, WorkFlows, EPS and SmartPort via Z39.50. The first 20 registrants for the session will receive a complimentary analysis of their current indexing environment.
